365 Days isn't dead yet :3
Just went on a short Easter hiatus, but now i'm playing a little catch ups.
I have a bunch of images to upload from each day, some digital, some pencil (need scanning), some on my other computer so they shall be uploaded today after work.
I think the main problem I have at the moment is that a lot of the dailies have been turning into full finished images, thus taking a little longer, while others keep getting shifted from one computer to the other as I work on them... and getting lost in the process ;p
Hopefully, I can catch up with all the missing days... though I think i've kind of forgotten where I should be with the days haha.

On another note:
My internet has been horribly shaped down to slower than dial up for the past week and a half so getting anything posted either takes forever or just doesn't work at all.
I have a rather small window of opportunity to get things done, including important updating to my new computer (yey!) early in the morning but it still doesn't leave much time to do anything else with the internet.
Today is the last day of this evil shaping. Thank goodness. I'm starting to go a little crazy without my interwebs. :p

This is a basic lines and greyscale version of an image, it's one of the ways in which I work sometimes, then I go back and add the colours I want to use while maintaing the values.

O_o my titles are getting worse and worse!

Today I only managed the base line art for this daily, it's past midnight and past my bedtime and i've had too many very late nights as it is... the tinnitus in my ears gets rather intolerable when I don't get enough sleep.

Today I was mostly out of the house so didn't get as much done on the daily as I would have liked so i'm going to continue today's into tomorrow and have the finished piece (hopefully!) as tomorrow's daily. Cheating? meh, perhaps. :p

Oh yes! also bought a new modem today so hopefully no more internet troubles, yay! :D

I can't believe it's already been over 50 days of design! Even I didn't think I would last this long, lol.

Today's girl is drawn and coloured with vectors.
I actually began with just a feather and it sort of went from there.
I was consciously trying to make her face more 'interesting' than conventionally beautiful, thus the odd, androgynous features. I rather like them. :p

Day 48's Daily is, obviously, a little late. Our internet has been rather spotty lately (that is a roaring understatement) and chose last night to continuously drop out every time I tried to use it.

Day 47 - Cardigan Dolly

I've slapped down some colour for now but i don't know if i'll keep them as i'm planning to colour her in Painter rather than in vectors. However, with my current passion for vector I may end up colouring her there anyway lol. We'll see.

I would have had this posted sooner except I couldn't for the life of me get her face right, something about the angle and the style I was aiming for and it just didn't want to turn out.
I must have reworked and reworked and reworked that face so many times and I'm still not sure I'm happy with it. Sigh.
I am, however, happy with her outfit, particularly her legs, which means it wasn't a total waste of time after all ^_^.

I've had a Red Bubble account for a couple of years now and I've never posted a thing on it.
I'm not a big fan on online art gallery style sites any more (I used to frequent DeviantArt quite a bit in the past), I feel I've outgrown that 'popularity contest' mentality so prevalent on these types of sites, however, I figured it was time I bit the bullet and tried to get some more stuff out there, especially since my style and media has changed quite a bit from my DA days.
So this is the first image that i'll be posting on Red Bubble and offering as a print (tomorrow as it's far too late right now :p).

Day 43 - Floral Mini Note and Envelope

Print, cut out and assemble. :)
The note is designed so that a single fold in half will allow it to fit in the envelope.
Final finished envelope with note inside is 11cm x 8cm.

To make the envelope:
~Cut around the outside lines (I recommend pre-folding and creasing everything before continuing, remember to fold so the designs are on the outside);
~Glue or glue tape on the top of the side tabs (the coloured sides);
~Fold the bottom section up and onto the gluey tabs, hold until they stick;
~Fold the top down and you have your envelope!
~Give to your loved one/someone special/mum on mother's day etc. :D

Day 42 - Naked Dolly Base

We've heard from most of our family, whether by proxy or directly, and they are safe.
The earthquake was devastating and the aftershocks continue, tremors would be an understated term as these aftershocks are ranging between 5 and 7 points on the richter scale. The main area where my family is situated is currently without water or electricity.
But they are alive and safe and together and knowing that has been a huge relief from the not knowing and constant knot in my stomach over the last 3 days.
My thoughts and prayers and well wishes are with my birth country and it's people, may they stay strong.

Day 34 - Heian Kokeshi

A while back, when I was quite sick for a time and completely went off art altogether, I began to doodle little kokeshi styled girls in my diaries. I loved designing outfits and facial expressions for them, and since that's basically all they are; a head and clothes, I enjoyed drawing them, it kept me with a pencil in hand, until slowly, I began to branch out and before I knew it, I'd started drawing again.
Thus, these little kokeshi girls have a special place in my heart. :)

This one is still a work in progress.

Day 32 - Girl With Berries

Sort of berries... berry flowers o_O yeah.
Today's girl marks a brief return to my pixely, painterly roots.
She was painted in Painter with a graphics tablet. Made the discovery that I am morbidly out of practice with my graphics tablet heheh, but it was still very enjoyable to paint freely after the tight mathematical like restrictions of beloved illustrator.

Day 31 - Gold Eyed Princess

I had a nice, neat list written out with possible themes for this month of Daily365, however, I left it at home :3
So I picked the first thing that popped into my head; Female Character Design (well, actually, first thing that popped into my head was 'princess' but we'll just disregard that for now).
So this month, i'm focusing on character design of the female kind, which makes me happy as I love drawing/designing strange, pretty, girly, not-girly, fantasy, sensual etc etc, females. :)
I'll also be using other digital programs as well as natural media, not just in Illustrator, though it will probably be the bulk of the designs as it's the program I am most trying to hone my skills on. Oh and to those who have Downloaded some of my stationary stuffs; i'll still be doing them, just incorporating this months theme. :)

Day 25 - Moon Face

I was reminded today, for no obvious reason, about something someone once called me, "Moon Face", refering to my rather round face and wide cheeks. I found it both endearing and irritating and the term stuck with me for a long time, almost like a complex you could say, lol.
So, that's today's 'theme'. :D

The above image is the original, I wanted to keep a soft glowing look and feel. Here's a version where the colours are a little more crisp, just for experimentation's sake.

Day 22 - Lily

Today's effort could have been better, I agree. My excuse is i've been battling a migraine most of the afternoon and my thinking is rather fuzzy.
Day 22 is a vectored lily, definitely a challenge! (i'm gonna have to revisit this one in the future, me thinks).Well, at least it done done. :)

Day 21 - Grungy Paper Notepad Tutorial

Day 21 is a little vectored printout project: Make your own grungy little notepad!

The design was created in illustrator (so still vectors!) using a few grunge and dirt brushes and a texture background as well as various layer blending effects.

Free to download and print out for personal use only. :)

Mini Instructions:
1. Click on the link, download the PDF file to your computer, open it, print it out onto A4 or Letter size paper (may need a little resizing) of a decent weight/thickness and not too opaque; I used an 80GSM weight, smooth paper. Regular printer paper works fine.
2. Print out more than one page, say, between 10 and 20 (5 or 10 double pages), depending on the weight of the paper (lighter/thinner paper = more pages can be bound together, thicker/heavier paper = fewer can be bound together as it becomes much more difficult to either punch holes or staple).
2. Trim if you prefer not to have the white borders showing.
3. "Bind" the pages together at the top section using a hole punch and strong thread/ribbon or staples.
4. Cover the binding with sticker paper or fabric of choice.
5. Enjoy your new notepad! :D

Photo Tutorial:

Gather your materials, here I have my printouts (I printed 9 pages so that's 18 sheets in my notepad, for more printing info, check the mini instructions above), a piece of recycled cardboard for the backing, sticky backed patterned paper for the upper wrap and tools of choice.

Trim your printouts to your desired size, here I've cut all the white out but you can leave it in if you like a border around each sheet.
Cut your backing card to the same size as your printouts.
Cut your sticker paper or fabric etc to the same width as the printouts and between 8 and 10cm high. You can easily measure how much you want to use, however, by putting the paper against the top margin of the printouts and roughly measuring and marking how far down you'd like the paper to go. Just remember to leave enough to wrap over the block of printouts and down the the back a little.

Gather your printed sheets and backing card together and jog them a bit to get them as aligned as possible.
Staple about halfway down the top margin on the printouts - Make sure your stapler is strong enough to staple cleanly through all your papers and card.
Another method here is to punch two holes halfway down the top margin and tie a ribbon or heavy thread through the gathered sheets. The next step is optional if you chose the hole punching method as your ribbon may make too much bulk for the covering sticker paper/fabric.

Covering sticker paper ready to be attached.

Remove the backing paper from the sticker paper and carefully align it with the sides of the bookblock (your block of printed sheets and card), a little over halfway down and covering the staples, just make sure you have enough of the sticker paper to wrap around the top and attach to the card at the back, as in the next photo.

Turn your block over and using a bone folder to help with the crease, pull the sticker paper over the top of the block and down to stick to the card backing.

Use a bonefolder or equivalent to apply pressure, carefully! or you might tear the paper where the staples are.
Smooth out creases and press the sticker paper firmly to the front and back of the block of sheets.

Enjoy your new notepad!
An easy little project under 30 minutes. :D

Day19 - Colour Vector Doodle

Those who know me know I'm primarily a pixel based artist, that is, I prefer painting in programs like Painter or even Photoshop, so those same people will probably understand how much this particular picture irked me.
I was a little ambitious this time, it took me a lot longer than I care to admit, but I just had to try it, so here is my attempt at "painting" in Vectors...

It was an arduous journey, but an interesting result, I think.
Don't know if I'll attempt it again any time soon though lol.

Sorry bout the crappiness of the doodle, I was focusing on the colouring technique more than the base line art (i.e. lines took me all of 10 minutes, once I got the hang of the brush, colouring took me the rest of the evening -_-).

5Landscape Cards (preview only, for printable see links below)

More personal printables for Valentines today.
These are made to be printed on A4 paper then cut into either landscape or portrait (depending on the ones chosen) and folded into cards, or just cut out the images and use on cards and valentines goodies etc.
Vectors as befits 'vector month' ^^.
Some brushes from BittBox are also used.

Here are the downloadable PDFs including matching envelopes:

2 x Landscape style cards
2 x Portrait style cards

Landscape Envelope 1 (corner hearts card)
Landscape Envelope 2 (3 hearts card)
Portrait Envelope 1 (bird and foliage card)
Portrait Envelope 2 (2 hearts card)

Mini tutorial:
1. Click on PDF links and download.
2. Save to your computer.
3. Print, resize or not it's up to you, otherwise they're a little smaller than 4x6" cards.
4. Cut out along the outside blue lines and between the two cards (watch which line you cut if it's the landscape or portrait cards!)
5. Fold in half to create your card.
6. Add embellishments or text inside the card.
7. Send to your loved one!

7a. Alternatively, you can cut out just the images themselves and paste them to your paper of choice.

I'm not feeling very well tonight, and I was planning to go to bed early but Illustrator had other ideas and didn't like rendering my clipping masks. So i'm still up and only have this to show for it. I kind of like the colour scheme though, so not a total loss.

Day 12 - Fan and Tree

A more stylised design today.
A fan, of sorts, inspired by a paper fan I made when I was a wee teenager and which I still have and love.

This is one of the few times I've used the brush tool in Illustrator, I find it rather unintuitive at best, even with a graphics tablet. I do like the effect, however.

Vectors and lots of time (work was quiet again -___- ).

Day 11 - Pale Doll

A cropped work in progress image is todays Daily. I started this earlier in the day (work was painfully quiet) and it took on a life of it's own.
It's not quite finished yet so I'll give you the cropped version, which imo, doesn't look all that bad :p
Vectors and a lot of fiddling. (there's actually a whole rest of a body under the crop, but that's for later ^^ )

Day - 10 The Red Mask

I was thinking about masks all day today, I had some (what I thought were) interesting ideas in my head about them and how to draw one.
This is not what I had in my head :(

Day 9 - Colour Schemes

Today's Daily is pretty simple, just me playing around with colour schemes and a simple pattern.
Work was a complete slog today and I'm mentally exhausted.
Ah, I knew there'd be times i'd get like this with the dailys, I just hoped it wouldn't have come so soon!
Still, an update is an update, a design is a design. I am satisfied. :)

Day 8 - Blue on Cornflower Blue

Today's Daily is a little faster than some of the others as I have a fair bit of work to do today and I won't get a chance later this evening. Still, this piece did have it's little niggles here and there, particularly trying to get the shadows not to multiply!
I love the (almost) minimalist look of this one, it's saving grace lol.
More Illustrator work.

Day 6 - Aged, Violet and Floral

A little late (I was at a friends birthday party) and waaaaay past my bedtime but up nonetheless. This chica's not missing a day if she can help it! >:D

Unfortunately, I'm rather exhausted from long driving and it's past 2am and so all I have tonight is an A4 printable page. I might use it for some book paper or something.

Day 5 - Melancholy Mermaid

Today was not a good day at work, inspiration was at a rather low point.
This started as a valentines doodle again but become this instead... and I rather like how it turned out.
Feeling much better now. :)

Day 4 - Repeating Vector Patterns

I was trying my hand at repeating patterns again, I love working with random shapes and geometric designs, putting shapes together until something pleasing or interesting comes of them. Work done in Illustrator again.

The one above is the original design, the two below are repeating (tiled) patterns that can be used as seamless background or texture patterns. Yup.

Day 3 - The Purple Shoes

Haha, this took a ridiculously (and embarrassingly) long time to finish today. Worked on it at work.
The sad thing is, I probably would have take a mere fraction of the time to finish it if I hadn't been doing it all in vectors. (Painter for the Win!!)
Vector + Vee + Time = FAIL.

Barely a minute after midnight and here's the first 365 Design A Day.
A long day, coupled with working on other projects has lead me to posting this a little later than I'd have liked but better late then never. Done in Illustrator in under an hour or so.

Was going to be for a printable Valentines card but now it seems a little rushed to me.
Even so, if anyone would like a higher res copy for their own personal use, let me know. :)
